The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
