Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu now.
